Renewal and Key Changes in Curate’s Combined Incentive Program!

Attention Kleros Curate submitters!

Starting from February, we are including six more chains in the Combined Incentive Program, as well as adapting the way rewards will be disbursed from the reward pool.

Have a look below for more details!

In case you’re new around here or need a refresher, read the section below. If you're an OG, feel free to skip the next section.

What are the security metadata registries?

  • Tokens Registry: the community-curated list of whitelisted and safe tokens that users could interact with confidently, minimizing the risk of malicious or insecure tokens.
  • Address Tags Registry (a.k.a. ATR): this registry enables users to identify the trustworthiness of addresses, mitigating the potential risks associated with interacting with unknown or suspicious addresses.
  • Contract Domain Name Registry (a.k.a. the CDN Registry): this registry serves a critical role in preventing front-end DNS attacks. It facilitates the mapping of contracts to the domains they are known to be associated with, ensuring users are interacting with the correct contract associated with a particular domain.

The above registries combine to form an important source of community curated security metadata where consumers of this data can secure their users’ dApp interactions by providing insights about each interaction.

This backbone powers essential tools like the Kleros Scout, a MetaMask Snap which gives users contract insights to secure dApp interactions. Read more about it here.

Reward pool

The reward pool consists of 300,000 PNK (~$5300 as of February 1, 2024) for submitters. Here is how the reward pool is allocated to the three registries across different chains.

  • Tokens (100,000 PNK)
  • ATR Registry (100,000 PNK)
  • CDN Registry (100,000 PNK)

Key change: The rewards will be calculated across all chains for every registry and will afterwards be disbursed from the three pools. This kind of calculation is different than before, because previously rewards were distributed equally between all four (at that time) supported chains.

The reasoning is simple - the rewards will follow the action. The more tagged contracts on a specific chain, the more rewards. The updated list of supported chains for this iteration of the Combined Incentive Program can be seen below.

  • Ethereum Mainnet
  • Arbitrum One
  • Optimism
  • Binance Smart Chain
  • zkSync
  • Avalance C-Chain
  • Gnosis Chain
  • Celo
  • Base Mainnet
  • Fantom Opera

Rewards calculation:

The reward pool was created to incentivise two actions:

  • Efforts/submissions towards more widely-used contract addresses,
  • Increased number of submissions.

Hence, part of the distribution will be weighted according to the total number of transactions historically with each of the tagged contract addresses, while the other part will be a static reward based on the total number of submissions.

The calculation of rewards will look like this:

reward per submission = (1/2*(reward_pool/total_submission )) + (1/2*(txns_with_contract*total_txns_with_all_contracts))

Previously, we used gas expended by the contract as a metric to measure how widely used a contract is. Since the number of chains supported have increased and the disparity in gas costs, we’re going with number of txns with the submitted contract as a proxy for the same.

Distribution will be handled directly by the Kleros Cooperative, similar to the previous round of combined incentives program. Distribution will occur after the end of every month. There is no cap on the number of qualifying submissions that each address can make. There is, however, a cap of 1000 PNK on the reward for each submission. This is to ensure that a large chunk of the reward pool isn’t paid out for very few entries.

Key Changes:

  1. The calculation of rewards per submission will now be based on the transaction counts of the contract submitted, rather than the gas expended by the contract.
  2. There will be a 1000 PNK cap on reward per submission.

Past amendments to be kept in mind

  • Submitting entries from addresses that were removed either in the same month or in the previous month, will only award up to the average reward per submitted contract within the period it became included. This ensures there are still incentives to resubmit entries with the updated data (and not spam resubmit highly used contracts to earn more), while making it still worthwhile for submitters of new entries to participate.
  • To ensure that the submissions rewards are going towards entries that add the most value to our partners and their users, we will be excluding new CDN entries involving contracts that are already tagged in the Tokens registry from the incentive program.

TL;DR

The Curate incentive program is being renewed along with some key changes led by community feedback and insights. The key changes are:

  1. Reward pool will not be split across chains, it is a combined reward pool of 300,000 PNK.
  2. Contracts from 4 chains previously qualified for rewards, it has now been increased to 10 chains. They are:
Ethereum Mainnet, Arbitrum One, Optimism, Binance Smart Chain, zkSync, Avalance C-Chain, Gnosis Chain, Celo, Base Mainnet, Fantom Opera.
  3. Txn count with contract will be used instead of gas expended by contract to measure how widely used a contract is, to calculate the rewards per submission. The formula would look like this: reward per submission = (1/2*(reward_pool/total_submission )) + (1/2*(txns_with_contract*total_txns_with_all_contracts))
  4. There is be a 1000 PNK cap on reward per submission.

This will be in effect for the month of February. We will monitor the impact and community discussions for feedback and then renew it for subsequent months with any changes if needed. Feel free to leave feedback and good luck hunting for new tags.

Edit on March 1, 2024: We will be continuing with this program from March onwards with the following change alone:
Previously, submitting entries from addresses that were removed either in the same month or in the previous month, were only awarded up to the average reward per submitted contract within the period it became included. We will no longer have this condition because maximum reward is now capped at 1000PNK per submission.
